I love pallet furniture because it has so much character and history. It reminds me of the 1920's, the dust bowl, quilts, rocking chairs, metal bowls, black and white, wood floors, water pitchers.  It reminds me of my Great Great Aunt Lizzy. She died in the late 1980's at almost 100 years old. She was living, by choice, in a very small house with no running water, no indoor plumbing, no electricity... she lived that way for her entire life, it's the only way she knew.

Two years ago we built a wood pallet lawn mower shed. It was my first time to build anything out of pallets and it was a great adventure. We learned a lot.  Please, watch the video above.

I've been itching to build something new and when Hayley came to be, frustrated that our current kitchen cabinet kept falling apart... I knew I had the perfect opportunity to create something amazing!

The first step in any great adventure is dreaming and gathering inspiration.  I've got to give a huge thank you to pinterest and the following ladies for their excellent blogs and friendly emails that helped me wrap my mind around how to create this cabinet:

Melissa Urban - Shabby Love
Becky Lamb - Beyond The Picket Fence

There's an old carpenters quote that says "If you can't sketch it, you can't build it." That's simple, but true. Once you know exactly what you want to build, take out your pen and paper and sketch it out. If you're building a piece that has to adhere to specific measurements (like our cabinet), make sure to include those measurements in your sketch and check everything twice!

Here is the final sketch I came up with to use as the road map for our pallet cabinet:
